About Surveyors Hill Winery and B&B

Gateway to the national capital, in a tranquil and beautiful landscape.

Our B&B

An historic property in the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales, Australia, Surveyors Hill offers the visitor wine, food, and accommodation in the beautiful Murrumbidgee Valley.

Here you can relax in rural tranquility, enjoying estate wines from our vineyards, olives from our trees, and farm produce including free-range eggs, jams and other products (such as our famous chili jams and curry pastes) all sourced from the property's gardens.

And yet, from Surveyors Hill the visitor can be enjoying all the attractions of Canberra, our National Capital, after only a 20 minute easy drive on divided highways.

Overlooking the valley of the Murrumbidgee River in a very beautiful landscape on the slope of Surveyor's Hill, our property covers 225 acres, and has plantings of 25 acres of vines. People who stay with us enjoy walking and exploring this historic part of the Canberra region, and those who enjoy a bit of a climb can walk to the top of Surveyor's Hill itself (735 metres), where great views can be had of Canberra and the Murrumbidgee valley.

Bed and Breakfast at Surveyors Hill has unique features, and is provided in the 1930s family homestead. Breakfast is served in the private dining room of the cottage.

The cottage has two double bedrooms with Queen size beds, and is fully self contained and private, with all facilities including an excellent kitchen, open fire in lounge room, electric heaters in all rooms etc. Guests have the cottage for their exclusive use because we only let it to one couple or family or group of friends at any one time.

Our Wines

All wines at Surveyors Hill are made only from grapes grown here, in vineyards at 550 to 680 metres above sea level. Our vineyards lie on the slopes of Surveyors Hill, an ancient volcano which was active more than 350 million years ago, leaving deep aging, granitic-like rocks (known as ignimbrite) of a coarse structure which yield low fertility sandy soils.

Our climate here is almost identical to that of central Spain, between Rioja and Valladolid.

We have the following varieties at Surveyors Hill: Riesling, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and in reds, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Touriga and Shiraz.

The vines were planted in 1986, and there have been more recent plantings of Grenache and Tempranillo.
