Commemorating Hall's Pioneers
14 November 2009
At a ceremony at the Peace Tree at Hall School on Remembrance Day, Margaret Morris of Hall hands Ms Kaye Hogan. AM, Deputy Chair, ACT Advisory Board of the Australian Red Cross, a copy of a compilation of articles published by the Queanbeyan Age during 1914 to 1919. The articles record the history of Hall Red Cross formed to prepare comfort parcels and raise funds for our local boys serving in the Great War.
A plaque commemorating the efforts of local Red Cross ladies of the time was also unveiled by Ms Hogan who spoke of the importance of local communities working for the those of greater need. "It is pleasing to see a community gathered today as it would have 90 years ago to honour the work of local ladies" she said. "It is great to see that local communities are recording and preserving this valuable historical information "
The Peace Tree was planted by Mrs Hollingsworth at a ceremony in 1919 to recognise the efforts of the Hall Red Cross. Thirty pine trees were also planted on the day by the Red Cross members.
